How height adjustability creates inclusive learning in schools and group events.

At schools, and in group learning environments, we use tools to help us teach. Learning is easier and more enjoyable when the right tools match the environment. Using large televisions and interactive screens has become common in learning spaces. Children and adults both enjoy when presentations, videos and images can reinforce learning. Oftentimes, however, in group learning environments, young children and/or handicapped individuals are not considered when placing learning aids at the right height for them.

Consider this scenario: There is a school gathering where young children are to watch a presentation in the library. A large tv screen is rolled in for the program. The children are asked to sit on the floor, since there aren’t enough chairs for all of them. The children are now sitting at a lower height (the floor). Watching the tv proves to be difficult, since the top of the screen is around 8.5 feet up. The screen is now out of focus to most of them, and this prevents the program from being fully seen. The children lose interest because they can’t really see the program, and the learning opportunity was missed.

This type of situation happens in classrooms, too. Fixed screens are typically placed up high for only standing adults to reach, so when a young child, or any person in a wheelchair, needs to reach the screen, it’s too high. They can’t reach it to participate in the group activity.

The days of fixed screens on the wall that cannot be height-adjusted, are over. Using a tv screen for education is common, so it’s time to upgrade our screen mounts to be height-adjustable, to make a way for all ages to participate. Inclusivity must be a part of the education space, so that all children and seated adults, can participate.

In 2026, we must consider all users, and build our spaces around inclusivity and group participation, to empower everyone who wants to learn.
